Economic Overview of Gabon

Located in Central Africa, Gabon is rich in natural resources. With an Atlantic coastline and land borders with Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, and the Republic of Congo, the country is sparsely populated, with around 2 million residents (2017), and 85% of its territory covered by forest.

Despite its low population density, Gabon is highly urbanized, with more than four out of five Gabonese living in cities. Libreville and Port-Gentil, the political and economic capitals, together account for 59% of the population.

As the fifth-largest oil producer in Africa, Gabon experienced strong economic growth over the past decade, driven largely by oil and manganese production. Over the last five years, the oil sector accounted for an average of 80% of exports, 45% of GDP, and 60% of government revenue. Facing declining oil reserves, authorities have pursued economic diversification.

Expatriates occupy highly specialized positions in oil and gas, mining, construction, and transport. Gabon is also investing in environmentally focused sectors such as tourism and forestry, which hold significant potential.

The technology sector is emerging as another growth avenue: Gabon is currently the leading Central African country in ICT.

Employment Multipliers and Economic Impact

The “Crude Oil and Natural Gas Production” sector has the highest employment multiplier in Gabon (2.83), reflecting its strong indirect impact on other sectors such as transport, communications, and administration, despite relatively limited direct employment due to capital-intensive operations.

Gabon ranks among the wealthiest African countries in terms of natural resources and per capita income. Its lands are rich in oil, various minerals, and extensive forests covering approximately 22 million hectares (82% of total territory), boasting remarkable biodiversity. The country also has significant arable land potential.

With a population of approximately 1.5 million, Gabon’s GDP per capita is among the highest in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Sector Overview

Agriculture: Accounting for around 5.4% of GDP (2018, World Bank) and employing roughly 37% of the workforce, the agricultural sector includes subsistence crops, rubber (mainly in the north), and palm oil. Gabon remains heavily reliant on food imports.

Industry: Representing 48.8% of GDP and about 10% of total employment, the industrial sector is dominated by oil, manganese mining, and wood processing (Gabon is the second-largest timber producer in Africa). Other industries include textiles, cement, chemical plants, breweries, shipyards, and cigarette factories, primarily located near Libreville and Port-Gentil.

Services: The services sector contributes 40.6% of GDP and employs 53% of the workforce, with the government as the largest employer. Tourism remains underdeveloped due to limited infrastructure and the country’s heavily forested landscape.
